We see many dangers in homes during our safety evaluations and one of the most common is the threat posed by the cords used on many common window coverings. The cords hang down and are very inviting to children to play with, even more so when there is furniture sitting near by that allows more access to the cords. Window covering manufacturers have been required to stop making the cords in a continuous loop for almost a decade, however, that hasn’t removed the entire problem.
According to the CPSC, as reported in a Consumer Reports blog entry, reports indicate that one child a month dies from a strangulation hazard related to window coverings. This is not just the loose outer cords used to raise and lower the coverings, but also the inner cords holding the coverings together. The CPSC has a detailed report listing more details and some things you can do to reduce the danger.
Consumer Reports has just listed an article about a window shade recall effecting 5.5 million shades sold by some very popular companies. There are links to 6 different recalls with product information, pictures and steps you can take regarding any products you may have purchased.
One of the simplest fixes is to use blind cleats to keep the cords up and out of reach. We have installed these simple items in hundreds of homes and if installed properly and high enough, reduce the danger the cords pose. Another option is to use a blind cord winder that you can install on the cord to keep the cords under control. Parents still have to be sure to use whatever safety devices they have installed in order for them to work!
